    Este Viaje Se Pone Cada Dia Mas Interesante

    viaje de la vidaCuando hablo de viaje, hablo de la vida.  Realmente uno no sabe cuantos dias o años está escrito que dure su viaje en esta tierra entonces las personas que uno conoce son importantes porque enriquece el camino mucho.  Hoy estuve hablando con una persona muy apasionada de Brasil que está logrando resultados interesantes (esa combinación es ganadora).  Fuera de eso, hay algo que tiene la gente de Brasil que los hace tan agradables y divertidos (es como los Australianos en el mundo anglo saxon).

    Me alegra tanto que estoy viendo cosas pasando que me hacen pensar que America Latina tiene chance de ser un participante mucho mas activo en lo que está sucediendo en el mundo de la innovación digital donde casi todas las industrias están siendo transformadas. Como escribí en mi reciente articulo de para KienyKe, las cosas realmente han cambiado.

    Como siempre he dicho, Brasil está “on fire” con Argentina y Chile despiertos y en la jugada.  Los otros paises creo que tienen mucha voluntad pero tienen que hacer mas para estar en un nivel acorde con la oportunidad de mercado.  En Colombia, tambien, he podido conocer a personas muy interesantes como algunos directivos de una empresa que organiza eventos de tecnologia, personas de gobierno y otros.  Mucho ha sido alrededor del Founder Institute pero tambien ha habido acción alrededor del Founder Institute y el evento de Adeo Ressi cuando hablará sobre el programa el 3 de marzo. Ya el Politecnico estará patrocinando el sitio y el streaming del evento y estoy buscando un patrocinio para la traduccion simultanea.

    En general, es muy estimulante este camino loco que he escogido (lleno de incertidumbre tambien).  La verdad, estoy mas y mas analizando las cosas basado en algo muy etereo que es si dicha activdad me va divertir y si estoy apasionado por eso.  Es increible como esa brujula me ha ayuda en el ultimo año a tomar mejores decisiones (aunque me llegó a esta avanzada edad). :)

    Panel Sobre Online Marketing

    Online Marketing Colombia PanelAyer tuve la oportunidad de moderar un panel sobre online marketing en Colombia. Abajo está el video pero no se porque salió tan borroso. Los panelistas fueron Paula Gaviria, Tuyo Isaza, Luis Acosta, Gabriel Amorocha y Matias Jaramillo y contamos con una audiencia de mas de 50 personas.  Gracias a la gran labor de Jaime Alberto Rincón, se pudo ejecutar en las excelentes instalaciones de Uniandinos.

    Me encantó conocer a personas que siguen mi blog como Javier (su esposa Ingrid), Ricardo y Juan Pablo.  Uno de ellos viene de Francia con el proposito de crear uno o mas startups en Colombia.  Varios conocían mi iniciativa del Founder Institute para traer  a las mejores practicas para crear startups.  Fuera de esto, tuve el mal gusto de promocionar mi taller sobre Innovación Digital. :)

    Salieron muchos temas interesantes durantes las conversaciones con los panelista.  Con respecto a las oportunidades en Colombia para crear impacto, Gabriel mencionó la importancia de crear contenidos y Matias especificó la importancia que estos sean de calidad. Un tema que salió varias veces fue la disincronización entre la cantidad de Colombianos que utilizan el Internet (alrededor de 60%) y los pocos fondos (alrededor de 3% de su presupuesto de mercadeo) que las empresas le dedican a estas iniciativas.

    Los panelistas fueron muy complementarios con Luis hablando de su experiencia variada y los logros que se han conseguido en Legis, Paula dando un caso de exito impactante (el de Coca-Cola) entre otras cosas, Gabriel hablando sobre la realidad Colombiana comparada con el resto del mundo y Matias haciendo algo dificil que es explicar conceptos esotericos en terminos palpables.  Finalmente, Tuyo, quien tiene un nombre que, en mi opinion suena excelente (Tuyo Isaza), habló apasionadadmente sobre varios temas incluyendo el hecho que lo digital no necesariamente se aplica solo a mercado – lo cual es el punto principal de mis talleres sobre Innovación Digital.

    Super bowl Sunday in Bogota Colombia

    Superbowl 2011About 15 years ago, when I first moved down here to Colombia from Silicon Valley, one of the biggest culture shocks was the fact that it was pretty much impossible to find a bar where I could watch the Super bowl.  After checking out numerous places, I was just unable to find any place that was showing the game (most didn’t even know what the Super bowl was).  This is in stark contrast to how things are today where one has a host of options where to, not only watch the Super bowl, but to really enjoy it.  By the way, my brother and I are the two on the left side of the photo (guess who is who).

    This may not have anything to do with anything, but last night, while watching this at the local Irish Pub, I couldn’t help thinking about how things have changed.  A lot of expats really are enjoying Colombia and this is just one of many reasons why they choose to stay.  In the last few weeks, I’ve been amazed by the amount of Colombians living abroad (Diaspora) who are either moving back here or considering it. Almost all of these are focused on the tech start-up market.

    Well, on a personal not, last night was also the end of a three week trip that my brother and his friend, Tim, have taken here in Colombia.  It was great to see how much they thoroughly enjoyed their trip and referred to it as the “trip of a lifetime.”  It seems that this isn’t just a case of a couple of guys who enjoy remote places.  This morning I was having breakfast with a super sharp entrepreneur, Camilo Gomez, CEO of Mantaraya Travel and he mentioned an article in the New York Times with it’s readers naming Colombia as the second highest rated travel destination.     Pivoting in Colombia

    Daniel DominguezI had a great coffee the other day at one of the many Juan Valdez locations here in Bogotá with an entrepreneur named Daniel Dominguez.  His company is called i-Azul, which was focusing on QR codes in general, and is pivoting by offering a more complete ticketing solution with Tickqr.  It goes a bit further than ticketing solutions such as Eventbrite in that, among other things, it makes better use of mobile devices (sms or smartphones).

    Daniel, who has a Masters in Robotics, is still in the process of pivoting his company.  Although, there’s still quite a ways to go, he’s shown persistence and tenacity in becoming a start-up entrepreneur as he’s been at this for a couple of years.  He’s got a great quality that I think will help him tremendously, which his interest in learning and getting guidance from the right places.  He’s been to Silicon Valley to get a feel for the start-up environment there and will be applying to the Founder Institute here in Bogotá.

    There is definitely an entrepreneurial culture in Colombia, but what I feel has been lacking is the development of high impact businesses.  In other industries, there are some great examples such as BodyTech, Andres Carne de Res and others.  Nevertheless, I believe that this country really needs to connect with the rest of the world and expand its start-up and investor networks to include Silicon Valley and other places and that’s one of the things that I hope that the Founder Institute will help with.  Apply here.
