    Founder Institute Bogota 2014 y Startup Meetup

    Este pasado jueves 30 de enero, tuvimos el primer Startup Founder Meetup 101 en la instalaciones de Wayra Colombia.  Fue una reunión productiva y lleno de “networking” entre personas interesados en el tema de startups en Bogotá.  También fue muy inspirador para mi escuchar las preguntas de los mas de 25 participantes y tratar de responder estos junto con otros del grupo quienes también ofrecieron sus puntos de vista.  También hablamos sobre el hecho que están abiertas las inscripciones para el Founder Institute Bogota 2014 y que, en este momento, es posible tomar gratis el examen que mide 12 características de emprendimiento.

    Dentro de los temas discutidos fue el del Founder Institute Colombia el cual ya estará lanzando el quinto grupo en abril de 2014 en Bogotá.  Hablé sobre como comenzó todo con mi capacidad de “molestar” al creador del Founder Institute, Adeo Ressi, y lanzar el primer capitulo del programa en todo America Latina. Aproveché hace tres años para, al mismo tiempo, escribir un articulo sobre este hecho el cuál apareció en el New York Times.  También hablé sobre los mentores de calidad global que apoyan a los emprendedores en Colombia.  Esto incluye los que han exitosamente creado sus propios startups en Colombia así como mentores internacionales como Gabe Zichermann quien nos acompañó hace unas semanas en Bogotá.

    Last year, as well as this year, I had the good fortune to complement my roster of amazing Founder Institute mentors who live in Colombia with impressive mentors from the US.  One of these was Gabe Zichermann, author of a number of top selling books on gamification and creator of the Gamificiation conference called GSummit.  Now, it looks as though Gabe may be back in town at the end of the year.

    This is exciting for myself and a lot of people.  During his last visit to Bogotá and Medellin, Gabe not only mentored at the Founder Institute, but he agreed to do a Gamificiation Workshop for which we were able to get some sponsors to put up the venue, food and snacks.  Not only this, but Gabe went out of his way to mentor some founders individually and do a lot of press interviews. Needless to say, he created quite an impact.

    Unfortunately, this year, because of his hectic schedule, Gabe was unable to come down and mentor during the Founder Institute session.  Nonetheless, a few days ago , he let me know that he may be able to make it down here at the end of the year.  In case this becomes a reality, I’ve set up the following Meetup Group for those interested in hooking up with him.

    Primer AVC Meetup en Bogota

    AVC BogotaEl ultimo martes tuvimos el primer AVC meetup en Bogota. Tuvimos una variedad de asistentes como empresarios web con clientes en America Latina y en EEUU en adicion a un fondo de inversion.   Tuvimos la fortuna de contar con las increibles oficinas de Studiocom para nuestra nuestra reunion gracias a Javier Montenegro.

    Hablamos de excelentes casos de exito en la region como MercadoLibre y Bucape con grandes valuaciones.  Aunque Brasil, Argentina y Mexico llevan la delantera en emprendimiento e inversion web, estuvimos de acuerdo que Colombia tiene todas las piezas para convertirse en una potencia tambien.

    La conversacion estuvo excelente e interactiva. Segun muchos de los participantes, parecia haber consenso en dos puntos: 1) falta de entrenamiento y preparacion del talento humano (tecnico y otros) y 2) mejores guias para los empresarios que desean crecer sus empresas.  Tambien, parece que hay mucho interes en iniciativas en estas areas ya que mas que un participante preguntaba sobre “el proximo paso” tomando este Meetup mas como un proyecto que una oportunidad para conversacion (la definicion de un Meetup).

    Digital Startup Ecosystem in Colombia – Bogota Meetup

    Bogota AVC MeetupWell, it’s been quite an active week. I had the good fortune to talk with Arturo and Omar from Emprende.la about the state of Digital Innovation in Latin America (according to moi). If you wish, you can listen to the podcast where I discuss my Incubator project and the fact that I’m still at the initial planning stage.  I also gave a radio presentation to a local station called RCN where I spoke about Digital Innovation in Latin America. I made this presentation utilizing the web platform called Pio.la.
